About this Higher Nitec Course

The Higher Nitec in Cyber and Network Security program is designed to equip students with a solid foundation in the field of cybersecurity and network administration. The curriculum is structured with core modules and specialized subjects, providing a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of information technology security.

Core Modules

Networking Fundamentals

Upon completion of this module, students will be proficient in setting up, configuring, and troubleshooting wired and wireless network systems for small office environments. They will gain the skills to provide network support and configure devices such as switches and wireless access points.

System Software Essentials

Students will learn to install and configure operating systems (OS) and application software on end-user computing devices. Additionally, they will acquire skills in performing OS maintenance and troubleshooting.

Computer Maintenance

This module focuses on the installation and configuration of hardware components and peripherals of end-user computing devices. Students will also be capable of performing maintenance and troubleshooting of hardware problems.

Networking Technology

Students will apply the fundamentals of computer networking in relation to the OSI model. They will gain the ability to configure and set up wired and wireless local area networks (LANs), including network segmentation. Documentation and monitoring of network performance are also covered.

Enterprise Networking

This module explores the configuration and setup of switched and routed networks with Virtual LANs (VLANs). Students will learn to set up wide area networks (WANs), implement access control lists, and troubleshoot common network issues.

System Administration

Students will be able to set up server operating systems, perform system administration tasks, and configure file server services. Basic system security implementation is also covered.

System Hardening & Infrastructure Services

This module covers server security hardening, infrastructure services management, automation of server administration, and the implementation of high-availability systems.

Virtualisation Fundamentals

Students will gain skills in setting up virtualization servers and environments. Additionally, they will learn to perform backup and recovery of virtual machines (VMs) for fault tolerance and basic troubleshooting with hypervisors and VMs.

Cloud System Administration

This module covers the administration of cloud/virtualization platforms and associated services. Students will learn to monitor resource utilization, troubleshoot performance and connectivity issues, and secure cloud/virtualized infrastructure.

Infrastructure Security

Students will gain skills in configuring firewall appliances, intrusion detection and prevention systems, firewall policies, and setting up Virtual Private Networks. Protection against security attacks, including the setup of end-point security measures, is also covered.

IT Security

This module focuses on network intrusion detection, prevention, and mitigation. Students will implement a secure network using Public Key Infrastructure technologies, set up secure wireless networks, and perform privilege identity management support functions.

Security Operations

Students will be prepared to take on tasks in a Security Operations Centre (SOC) environment. This includes monitoring and identifying security risks, analyzing and classifying security risks through security monitoring systems, and applying appropriate countermeasures to mitigate identified threats.

Security Vulnerability Testing

This module covers system and network scanning, vulnerability assessment, and documentation of identified vulnerabilities. Students will also gain skills in performing basic penetration testing and preparing appropriate test documentation.
